Gwen Versluis

Gwen Versluis

MEDIUM: Collage and mixed media
CITY: Winterthur, Switzerland

Gwen Versluis is a Dutch artist living in Switzerland and working in her studio in Zurich. Her mixed media works feel at the same time experimental and thoroughly organized, inspiring a mutual compatibility of both. The often-elevated collages remind of objects, lifting the applied flat magazine material to a third dimension.
Artig Gallery presents 5 works of the exciting “Fragments”-series, which were part of different of her exhibitions and 3 portrait-like mixed media works. All of Gwen’s artworks are signed and come in a white wooden show frame.

“In art, I want to express the unspoken and the unspeakable. No other discipline gives me a better tool for understanding and making sense of a world, ruled by the laws of the perfect, the successful and the shiny surface, the contradictions and conflicts underneath. Things we do not like to speak about or cannot find words for are there and they define who we are. During the process of creation, I find my personal answers to such questions. I like to encounter them simultaneously with wit and seriousness, and to transform those issues into surreal, weird and fantastic character stories. With this transformation I aim to lift my personal issues to the level of universal questions, to which spectators are invited, in which they can find their own truths.
My working style is characterized by experimentation and space for the coincidental. Looking at my collages, you can recognize the raw and imperfect look that my work often has, which derives from the spontaneous process of creation. It reflects and underlines my intention of dealing with the pretended impeccable. The search for a balanced composition, on the other hand, is a cross-reference to finding peace with the status quo. Earlier collages are mainly made of magazine paper. In my newer works I exploit the possibilities of different materials, like prints on transparency sheets, transparency paper, transformation and multiplication of the material, - or of the things directly - by photocopy, including my own drawings and photos.
I find inspiration in the work of many modern and contemporary artists, in literature, music and subculture movements: Surrealism, Dadaism, Cubism, Expressionism, Pop Art, Street Art.”
